The Joy of Missing Out

Teaching Notes

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day…

Genesis 3:8

Polyvagal Theory: Our first human instinct is relational, not survival

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

Genesis 3:8-9

We now have a fig leaf and a phone.

The tragic irony is this: Our FOMO is creating a far deeper POMO.

Project Statement: …personal devices are shifting behaviors while simultaneously blending into the landscape by taking form as being one with the body. This phantom limb is used as a way of signaling busyness and unapproachability to strangers while existing as an addictive force that promotes the splitting of attention between those who are physically with you and those who are not.

The One who said, “Where are you?” also said, “Here I am!”

The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood.

John 1:14 MSG

“I’ve told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I’m no longer calling you servants because servants don’t understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I’ve named you friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from the Father.”

John 15:11-15

Jesus’ JOMO:

Jesus practiced JOMO with the masses to delight in the few.

Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

Mark 6:31

Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge….He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

Mark 4:1, 34

Jesus practiced JOMO with the few to delight in the One.

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”

Mark 1:35 - 37

Jesus practiced JOMO with the One to delight in the many.

…God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

1 Timothy 2:3-4

For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 12:2

What is your NOMO? ________________

Where there is no JOMO, your digital FOMO will lead to real POMO and the greatest tragedy is this: _________

Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere;

Psalm 84:10
