The Digital Rule of Life

Teaching Notes

Redeeming the Time

See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Ephesians 5:15-16 NKJV

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

1 Peter 5:8

An Ancient Solution – The Rule of Life

I would like to recommend a proactive strategy that has been practiced for centuries by fellow followers of Jesus—more specifically, Benedictine monks.

  • Essentially, the rule of life recommended structure, pattern, routine in one’s day that would help you live a balance life between prayer and scripture reflection, work, and relationships.

  • This pattern keeps them alert and grounded. We aren’t monks and our pattern doesn’t need to be as intense, but we need structure in our day to balance the spiritual life, with our work life, personal care, and relationships.

Establishing your Digital Rule of Life

Designate Tech-Free Zones.

  • Establish certain areas in your home, like the bedroom or dinner table, where smartphones use is not allowed.

Set Specific Times for Checking Notifications.

  • Instead of constantly responding to every ping, allocate specific times of the day to check and respond to notifications.

Use Do Not Disturb.

  • Activate the “Do Not Disturb” feature during times of work, study, or rest to minimize distractions.

Delete Unnecessary Apps.

  • Regularly review and uninstall app that you don’t use or that contribute to unhealthy habits.

Mindful Scrolling.

  • Be conscious of the time spent on social media and aim to engage in activities that add value to your life rather than mindless scrolling.

Continue using the Reclaimwell app.

  • Leverage built-in smartphone features to track and limit your screen time on certain apps or functions.

  • We can expect what we inspect.

Have a Digital-free Sabbath Day

  • Pick one day where you are not on your phone at all.
