Trusting God's Process: What David's Life Teaches Us About Faith, Timing, and Surrender
Most of us have a picture in our minds of how we think our lives are supposed to go. And most of us, at some point, have had to take that picture off the wall. The life of David shows us what it looks like to keep trusting God when the process looks nothing like what we expected.

Why Does Life Never Go the Way We Planned?
From childhood, we build a vision of our future. We imagine the career, the family, the timeline. But the older we get, the more we realize that life rarely follows the script we wrote for it.
The question is not whether our plans will change. They will. The real question is: how do we trust God when the life we are living is not the one we imagined?
That is exactly what we see in the life of David. He was anointed king as a young man, but it took 15 to 20 years before he actually wore the crown. The gap between the calling and the crown was filled with confusion, danger, waiting, and pain. And yet, David learned to trust God through every step of it.
Here is the big idea: You do not have to understand God's process in order to trust God's character.
What Does It Mean to Surrender Your Plans to God's Purposes?
God's Process Rarely Looks Like What We Expect
In 1 Samuel 16, Samuel is sent by God to anoint the next king of Israel. He goes to the house of Jesse, expecting to find a strong, impressive leader among Jesse's older sons. But God stops Him every time.
The one God chose was the youngest, the smallest, the one out watching the sheep. Nobody thought to bring him in. And yet, that was the one God had selected.
This is a pattern we see throughout all of Scripture. God's process does not align with human wisdom. Moving forward with God sometimes looks like going backward in the eyes of the world.
The Calling Comes in a Moment, But the Process Takes Years
Think about Joseph, who received a dream from God about ruling and reigning, only to be thrown in a pit by His brothers, sold into slavery, and imprisoned before that dream ever came true. Think about Moses, who spent 40 years in the wilderness. Think about Paul, who disappeared for years after his encounter with God before ever planting a church. Think about Jesus Himself, who spent 40 days in the wilderness being tested before entering public ministry.
Over and over again, Scripture shows us the same thing. God gives a calling, and then there is a long, often painful process before the fulfillment of that calling.
Right after David is anointed king in secret, the very next thing that happens is he is sent to serve Saul, the king who would have killed him if he knew David had been chosen to replace him. Of all the places David could have gone, God sent Him straight into the most dangerous one.
Just because the process does not make sense to us does not mean it does not make sense to God.
God's Purpose Is to Teach Us Dependence
If God gave us the full five-step plan, we would be tempted to figure it out on our own. We would not need to lean on Him. But that is not what God wants. The primary theme running through Scripture from Genesis to Revelation is dependence. Full surrender. Trusting God completely.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding." - Proverbs 3:5
How Do You Trust God's Timing When You Are Tired of Waiting?
David Asked "How Long, O Lord?" Too
One of the hardest things in the Christian life is trusting God with the timeline of your life. We want God to move on our schedule. And David felt that tension deeply.
In Psalm 13, written during one of the most difficult seasons of his life, David cries out: "How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?"
But then, in the very same psalm, he says: "But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation."
In one breath, he is asking how long. In the next, he is declaring trust. That is not a lack of faith. That is what real faith looks like in the middle of a hard process.
Your Timeline Is in His Hands
In Psalm 31, David writes: "I trust in you, Lord. I say, 'You are my God.' My times are in your hands."
God's timing is almost never aligned with our timetable. But when God moves, He moves suddenly. The moment may be sudden, but the process rarely is. Sometimes you have to wait a long time for the suddenly of God.
Some of us are so busy grieving the life we thought we would have that we are missing the ways God is moving in the real life we are living right now.
What Happens When You Are Tempted to Take a Shortcut?
Never Compromise Your Integrity When the Process Gets Painful
One of the sharpest contrasts between Saul and David is how each of them responded when the process got hard. Saul, when things felt out of control, stopped waiting on God and took matters into His own hands. He disobeyed, made excuses, and was ultimately rejected from being king.
David faced a very different kind of temptation. After years of running from Saul, David found himself hiding in a cave with 400 men at his back. Saul, who was hunting David with 3,000 soldiers, wandered into that exact cave and fell asleep.
David's men told him this was the moment God had been preparing. Just take the throne. End the running. But David refused.
He said: "The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord's anointed." - 1 Samuel 24:6
David chose not to take by force what God had promised to give Him in time. He refused to become a murderer to get to the throne faster.
Never Sacrifice Who God Is Calling You to Be to Get Where God Is Calling You to Go
Shortcuts are tempting, especially when you are tired and disappointed and the process has taken longer than expected. You want the promotion, so you are tempted to manipulate. You want financial security, so you are tempted to cut ethical corners. You want the pain to stop, so you reach for something that numbs it tonight but hurts you tomorrow.
The shortcut might get you where you want to go, but it will cost you your soul in the process. As Jesus said: "What does it benefit a man to gain the whole world if He loses His soul?"
What Should You Do When You Are in a Painful Season?
Run Toward God, Not Away From Him
Psalm 56 and Psalm 57 were both written by David while He was hiding in a cave, running for His life. And what did he do from that cave? He worshipped.
"When I am afraid, I put my trust in you." - Psalm 56:3
"I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills His purpose for me. My heart, O God, is steadfast. I will sing and make music." - Psalm 57:2, 7
He did not say he trusted God and therefore was never afraid. He said he was afraid, and he chose to trust anyway. He worshipped from the cave. He praised God in the wilderness.
When you are in a confusing season, when life is not going the way you planned, that is the perfect moment to run toward God and worship Him. Worship stabilizes your heart to trust God's character when you do not understand the process.
How Does God Use Every Season of Your Life?
Around 1501, Michelangelo was commissioned to carve a statue of David from a massive block of marble that other sculptors had abandoned. They said the stone had too many flaws and cracks. Michelangelo looked at that same block and said he could see something amazing inside it. For three years, he chiseled away everything that was not the David, using every imperfection, every crack, every broken piece, until one of the greatest works of art in human history emerged.
That is a picture of how God works in your life. He never wastes a single season. He never wastes a single circumstance. Everything you are walking through, He is using to shape and mold you, to bring out from within you who He has ultimately called you to be.
"He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." - Philippians 1:6
God is a master artist. He knows what He is doing with your life. He knows the process. He knows the end from the beginning. And every step of the way, He is with you.
Life Application
This week, identify one area of your life where you have been striving to control the outcome or take a shortcut because the waiting has become too painful. It might be a relationship, a career decision, a financial situation, or a prayer you have been praying for a long time. Choose to surrender that specific thing to God this week. Write it down, pray over it, and declare out loud: "My times are in Your hands."
Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:
Is there a picture on the wall of my heart that I need to take down and replace with trust in what God is actually doing in my life right now?
David was anointed king in secret and then almost immediately sent to serve the very man who would have wanted him dead if he knew the truth.
Have you ever felt like God was leading you somewhere that seemed to contradict what He had promised you? What was that like?Am I tempted to take a shortcut in any area of my life that could compromise my integrity or my character?
Proverbs 3:5 says to trust in the Lord and not lean on your own understanding. In what area of your life right now is it hardest to stop leaning on your
own understanding and simply trust God?When the process gets painful, do I run toward God or away from Him?
Pastor Jonathan said, ‘Sometimes you have to wait a long time for the suddenly of God.’ How do you personally stay faithful and hopeful during a long
season of waiting?Am I so focused on the life I thought I would have that I am missing what God is doing in the life I am actually living?
You do not have to understand God's process to trust His character. He is good. He is sovereign. He is working it out for your good and for His glory.
