Key Verse: I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. (pg. 353, John 15:11)

Key Idea: Despite my circumstances, I feel inner contentment and understand my purpose in life.

Joy in spite of my circumstances

Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters,β€―that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel.β€―13β€―As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard[b]β€―and to everyone else that I am in chainsβ€―for Christ.β€―14β€―And because of my chains,β€―most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.

15β€―It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill.β€―16β€―The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.β€―17β€―The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition,β€―not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.β€―18β€―But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. (pg. 363-364, Philippians 1:12-18)

Joy in spite of my past

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal,β€―but I press on to take holdβ€―of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.β€―13β€―Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behindβ€―and straining toward what is ahead…(Philippians 3:12-13)

Joy in spite of other people

17β€―Join together in following my example,β€―brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.β€―18β€―For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears,β€―many live as enemies of the cross of Christ.β€―19β€―Their destinyβ€―is destruction, their god is their stomach,β€―and their glory is in their shame.β€―Their mind is set on earthly things.20β€―But our citizenshipβ€―is in heaven.β€―And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,β€―21β€―who, by the powerβ€―that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodiesβ€―so that they will be like his glorious body. Joy in spite of my stuff

11β€―I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be contentβ€―whatever the circumstances.β€―12β€―I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry,β€―whether living in plenty or in want.β€―13β€―I can do all this through him who gives me strength. (Philippians 4:11-13)
