Easter Weekend

Why Easter Matters: The Life-Changing Truth of the Resurrection

Easter represents the most significant event in human history. Today, an estimated 2.5 billion people across every continent—from Antarctica to outer space—gather to celebrate one incredible truth: Jesus Christ rose from the dead. This isn't just a religious tradition; it's the foundation of hope for humanity.

The Historical Reality of the Resurrection

Why Would Anyone Die for a Lie?

After Jesus died on the cross, there were no believers left waiting outside the tomb. Peter went back to fishing. The disciples scattered in fear, thinking they might be next. They had watched their leader brutally crucified, and they knew with certainty that nobody comes back from that.

Something extraordinary had to happen to transform these terrified, scattered followers into bold witnesses who would spend the rest of their lives proclaiming Jesus was alive—many dying for this belief. People don't die for something unless they believe it's absolutely true.

The Eyewitness Account

Matthew, one of Jesus' closest friends and an eyewitness, recorded what happened:

"'Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit... When the centurion and those who were with him keeping watch over Jesus saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, Truly this was the Son of God.'" - Matthew 27:50, 54 (KJV)

Then came the resurrection:

"'Now after the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it... But the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.'" - Matthew 28:1-2, 5-6 (KJV)

Three Reasons Why Easter Changes Everything

1. Death Has Been Defeated

The resurrection proves there is life after death. As Scripture declares: "'Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?'" - 1 Corinthians 15:54-55 (KJV)

After Jesus rose from the dead, the New Testament writers began referring to death differently—they called it "sleep." Death is no longer final; it's temporary, like an afternoon nap until Christ returns.

The word "cemetery" comes from the Greek word meaning "sleeping place." In Jesus, God has transformed our greatest fear into a resting place until resurrection day.

2. Relationship with God Is Possible

Sin separated humanity from God, but through Jesus' death and resurrection, we can be fully forgiven and restored to relationship with our Creator. Jesus said: "'I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.'" - John 14:6 (KJV)

The Criminal on the Cross

The most powerful example of God's grace is the criminal crucified next to Jesus. This man had never attended church, never been baptized, never done good deeds—he was dying for his crimes. Yet when he called out, "Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom," Jesus responded: "'Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.'" - Luke 23:42-43 (KJV)

This shows that salvation is a free gift from God, not something we earn through good works.

3. Our Pain Can Be Redeemed

When Jesus appeared to his disciples after the resurrection, he still bore the scars from his crucifixion. He didn't have to keep them—in his resurrected body, he could have had perfect skin. But he chose to keep his scars.

A receipt tells you something was paid for, but a scar tells you the person who paid for it loves you. If the risen King still has his scars, then our scars, pain, and brokenness are not signs of ultimate defeat—they're canvases for God to do his greatest work.

Coming to God on His Terms

The Only Way to the Father

Just as exclusive events like the Masters Tournament have specific requirements for entry, coming to God requires meeting His terms. The good news is that God's requirement is simple: faith in Jesus Christ.

All are invited—regardless of race, background, or past mistakes. There's only one condition: you must go through Jesus. He's the doorway back to God.

No One Is Too Far Gone

The Bible is filled with broken heroes, not superheroes—people who failed repeatedly yet found grace. This shows us that:

  • There is no grave too deep that Jesus cannot reach us

  • No sin is so horrible that God's grace can't cover it

  • His faithfulness is deeper than our failure

  • His patience lasts longer than our problems

  • His grace is greater than all our sins

Life Application

This Easter, the risen Jesus asks you one simple question: "Will you believe?" Not just intellectually, but enough to surrender your life to Him as Savior and King.

If you've never put your faith in Jesus, today is your opportunity. Simply pray: "Jesus, thank you for dying for my sins on the cross. I believe you rose from the dead. I surrender my life to you as my Savior and King. I want to follow you all my days."

If you're already a believer, let the reality of the resurrection transform how you view your current struggles. Your pain and scars are not the end of your story—they're opportunities for God to display His redemptive power.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. Pastor Jonathan mentioned that after Jesus died, there were no believers waiting outside the tomb. What does this tell us about the disciples' expectations, and how does this strengthen the case for the resurrection?

  1. Jesus said 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.' How do you respond to people who find this exclusive claim difficult to accept?

  2. Pastor Jonathan explained that after Jesus' resurrection, the New Testament refers to death as 'sleep' rather than a final end. How does this perspective change the way we view death and grief?

  3. Discuss the story of the criminal on the cross. What does this teach us about God's grace and the requirements for salvation?

  4. Why do you think Jesus chose to keep His scars after His resurrection? What comfort or hope does this provide for our own pain and struggles?

  5. Pastor Jonathan said 'His faithfulness is deeper than your failure. His patience lasts longer than your problems.' How have you experienced this truth in your own life?

  6. What does it mean to 'come to God on His terms' in our current culture that emphasizes personal choice and individual preferences?

  7. How can knowing that Jesus conquered death change the way we live our daily lives and face our fears? The resurrection isn't just a historical event—it's the foundation of hope that death has been defeated, relationship with God is possible, and even your deepest pain can be redeemed. This is why 2.5 billion people gather today to celebrate: because Jesus really did rise from the dead, and that changes everything.

Key Takeaways

  1. The resurrection of Jesus is historically credible because the disciples went from abandoning Jesus to dying for their belief that He was alive

  2. Easter answers three fundamental human needs: victory over death, relationship with God, and redemption of our pain and suffering

  3. We must come to God on His terms through faith in Jesus Christ - He is the only way to the Father

  4. Death has been transformed from our greatest fear into temporary sleep until Christ returns

  5. Jesus kept His scars after resurrection to remind us that our own scars and pain can be redeemed and used by God for good
