Teaching Notes

A GREAT PLOT TWIST...

  • Begins with mystery.

  • Has a BIGGER STORY holding all the plot lines together.

  • Starts with the end in mind.

  • Reveals airtight logic.

  • Is life altering

Cleopas’ experienced a huge plot twist.

  • Their failed Rabbi...

  • Their failed investment…

  • They failed to stop it…

He said to them, ‘How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?’ And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

Luke 24:25-27

Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.

Luke 24:31

It is true! The Lord has risen.

Luke 24:34

  • Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. (Luke 4:21)

“Of all the Evangelists, Luke is the most intentional and the most skillful, in narrating the story of Jesus in a way that joins it seamlessly to Israel’s story.”

Richard Hays, Echoes of Scripture in the Gospels

  • Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms. (Luke 24:44)

We’re going to read the entire New Testament in 8 weeks together.

Here’s how:

  • Individually read the Bible every week.

  • Follow along with the video series.

  • Join your small group in the discussions.

  • Come back each week for a wrap on what you’ve just read where I’ll/we’ll be preaching from a section that you’ve read together.

Going Deeper Discussion

  1. What’s your favorite cinematic plot twist and why?

  2. In your spiritual journey, what basic plot lines have you believed about Jesus throughout the years? (i.e. that he was a failed rabbi? That he never even lived? That his body was stolen or missing? Etc). What do you now believe?

  3. Put yourself on the road to Emmaus where the risen Jesus appears. What are you experiencing, thinking, or feeling?

  4. What’s a failure in your life and how have you interpreted it? How does that compare/contrast with how God views it?

  5. From this New Testament Challenge, what’s your personal challenge right now?
