Teaching Notes

Q: What uncharted journey are you on right now?

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Hebrews 11:1

And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise.

Hebrews 11:11

SARAH WAS UPROOTED:

Abram took his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot, and all their possessions which they had accumulated, and the people which they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan;

Genesis 12:5

SARAH WAS ABANDONED:

“Please say that you are my sister so that it may go well for me because of you, and that I may live on account of you.”

Genesis 12:13

SARAH WAS HURT:

When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.” “Your slave is in your hands,” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.

Hebrews 16:4-6

SARAH COULD ONLY LAUGH

“Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked him.

“There, in the tent,” he said.

Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.”

Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?”

Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”

Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.”

But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.”

Genesis 18:9-15

And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise.

Hebrews 11:11

EVEN SARAH...EVEN YOU

CONSIDER HIM FAITHFUL

Going Deeper Discussion

  1. What uncharted journey are you on right now?

  2. How easy is it for you to slip into thinking that your journey will end in “total epic disaster?”

  3. The pain of infertility is terribly difficult to discuss with others-- particularly those that have not experienced it. Therefore, please practice utmost sensitivity with one another as you ask this question: “What part of Sarah’s journey can you most identify with-- being uprooted, abandoned, hurt, infertility, or laughing as your only option left?”

  4. What part of Becca’s story touched you most deeply?

  5. What does it look like for you to “consider Him faithful” right now?
